SCC Baseball Final Features Red Hot Teams - SWC Lacrosse on SNCTTV Tonight

Yesterday was a rather interesting day in the world of SCC tournament baseball - first Cheshire continued their outstanding play of late by beating Amity 6-2. It is only the third win by Cheshire over a Spartan team in the last decade. The win sends Cheshire to the SCC championship game for the first time since 1996. The Rams lost to Notre Dame WH 6-3 in the “96” title game.

Amity coach Sal Coppola must be very concerned with his clubs recent play - they lost the final two games of the regular season to Foran 1-0 and North Haven 8-7 and have be victorious only twice in there last five.

They did rebound to defeat Foran 4-0 in the SCC quarterfinals but look lackluster yesterday. To be fair the Spartans have lost a couple of key members for the season because of injury. Third baseman Mark Esposito and center fielder Chris Katz are both gone. Esposito was a solid defensive third baseman, while Katz was an important clog in the batting order.

The Spartan defense suffered yesterday too. Cheshire exposed some cracks in the infield using the bunt as an offensive weapon.

They Spartans will be a high seed when the CIAC Class LL pairings are announced later today and should begin the tournament with a couple of home games.

Cheshire has been just the opposite down the stretch and seems to be peaking at the right time and the result seven consecutive wins. The pitching staff in particular has been amazing. They had combined for 28 scoreless innings before Amity scored a pair of runs in the 6th inning of yesterday’s semifinal game.

Two of the Rams starters Ryan Rougeot and Max Slade have allowed just 10-hits in two tournament wins. The offense is red hot too, scoring 11 runs in the tournament. They have been led by catcher Connor David 5-hits in the SCC tournament and Tyler Robinson 6-hits.

Cheshire will play Fairfield Prep in the SCC Championship game on Saturday. The Jesuits will make a bit of school history as they make their first-ever appearance in the SCC championship game. The tournament dates back in 1995.

The Jesuits are a very athletic team and appear to playing there best baseball at the end of the season. The have won eight in row, there last loss was back on May 6 when they were beaten by rival Xavier 8-7.

The Jesuits are led by shortstop Alex Heiman and DH Antony Redamonti.

Cheshire and Fairfield will square off in the SCC title game on Saturday May 28 at Yale Field with a noontime start.

SportingNewsCT.com will broadcast the game live.

Tonight on Sportingnewsct.com we broadcast the Boy’s and Girl’s SWC Lacrosse championship games from Pomperaug High School.

Portsmouth hits historic mark - The Boston Globe

Portsmouth hits historic mark - The Boston Globe

Good Play - Bad Play - Play-by-Play

Former Notre Dame West Haven baseball and football standout Conor Keniry  is having a fine freshman year at Wake Forest. Keniry as set a couple of Fr. marks including stolen bases (10) and most impressively walks (23). It show that Keniry is being patient at the plate. He is batting .214 with 11 RBI. Conor has been solid in the field also, he as committed just 4 errors in 39 games at second base.

Keniry helped propel the Deacon Demons to there first  .500 ACC season since 2006.  They play Virginia in round one of the ACC playoffs on Wednesday May 25 at Durham Bulls Baseball Park in North Carolina.

I am Boyling over  because of the collapse of the Bruins on Saturday when they allowed three goals on five shots in a span of less than four minutes to Tampa Bay in critical game 4 for of the Eastern Division Championship round.  The B’s who handled the 1-3-1 neutral zone trap during the first three games of the series didn’t make the adjustment to the Lightning changes on Saturday.

The Lightning through the first three games - set up the trap at the red-line - when they pushed it forward into the B’s half of the ice on Saturday the B’s attempted short passes through less space and as a result the transitions on turnovers had the red light flashing behind Tim Thomas.

The B’s defenseman need to be patient and reverse the flow and find the seam behind the aggressive strategy.

Great question are hockey fans in Connecticut tuned into the B’s skate for the cup or are they just thinking where are the Whalers?  How about you?

The weather has me Boyling over the top of the pot. When will Mother Nature flick the “good weather” switch? The SCC baseball tournament begins this week on Tuesday they will play four games. Two games at Quigley in West Haven and two more quarterfinal round games at Whitey Piurek Field at West Haven high school.

SportingNewsCT.com will broadcast all four games on Tuesday beginning at 4pm.

Just In - Notre Dame vs. Trumbull Lacrosse Postponed

Ok Here is the story the lacrosse game between Notre Dame and Trumbull has been postponed until Friday May 20, because of a problem with the lights at Trumbull High School. According to Athletic Director Michael T. Herbst someone cut the power lines to the lighting system at the stadium. Herbst stated that the lines where clearly marked with spray paint and some ***** that was told more than once to beware of the danger has turned the lights out. The pot is bubbling over.

Changes in the Wind and Wild Finish to SCC Baseball Season

In chatting with West Haven Athletic Director Jon Capone and Notre Dame WH AD Tom Marcucci the other night at West Haven High School. They mentioned that 7 teams might be logged jammed in a tie-breaker situation for the final spot in the upcoming SCC baseball tournament which begins next Tuesday May 24 at three locations including West Haven HS, Quigley Stadium and Cheshire HS.

The semifinals will played at Yale on Thursday May 26 and the SCC championship game is slated for Yale on Saturday. You can listen to or watch the games live on www.sportingnewsct.com

The rumor is that Masuk quarterback Casey Cochran, the Gatorade State Player of the Year is leaving Masuk to find a program where they play more of a pro offense. Also Dad looking to get back into coaching (Maybe the kid)

Also Panther coach John Murphy will he stay or will he go to coach somewhere else? Maybe Southington?  DJ Hernandez let the team to an 8-2 mark a year ago but has left the position under some controversy.

HS Lacrosse on SNCTTV.com tonight at 7 PM

I know the boys and girls who play lacrosse love the sport. It is evident with growth in numbers at the youth and high school level. Oh and by the way I find the game entertaining also, so please don't take the following the wrong way. Matter of fact we feature lacrosse tonight on sncttv.com at 7pm when Notre Dame West Haven battles Guilford.

But I do worry about the sport of baseball. We are certainly losing some quality athletes to lacrosse. Many of the athletes find the game more rewarding - it is fast - it is physical - it involves strategy and team work, which by the way are all important aspects for a sound mind, body and soul.

So what do you think? Is baseball in trouble of finding enough athlete to play the game at a high skill level?

One thing is certain both lacrosse and baseball need to be played at a high skill level to be entertaining for the fans.
